Men’s Basketball

The Blackburn College men’s asketball team broke through for their first victory of the season on Saturday, Jan. 5, with a 53-50 victory at Principia College. James Gowin scored 12 points and Jon Lowry added 11 points as the Beavers claimed the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Victory.

Brandon Adams pulled down a game high 10 rebounds for Blackburn. The Beavers led 28-26 at the half and had to withstand a game-tying three point attempt at the buzzer to prevail. Blackburn shot 36 percent for the contest on 32 of 62 shooting.

The Beavers committed 15 turnovers compared to just nine for Principia. Blackburn is now 1-11 on the season and will host a pair of games this week taking on MacMurray College at 8 p.m., Thursday Jan. 10, and then on Saturday, Jan. 12, the Beavers host Spalding University at 3 p.m.

Women’s Basketball

The Blackburn College women’s basketball team won their first contest of the season on Saturday, Jan. 5, with a 62-41 victory at Principia College. The Beavers used a big second half to pull away for the first victory in Head Coach Jen Windmiller’s career at Blackburn.

Shelby Smith led the way for the Beavers with 22 points while Briana Rae chipped in a double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Rashonda Willis and Erin Bell each contributed nine points apiece. The Beavers shot 30 percent for the contest on 22 of 74 shooting.

The Beavers forced the Panthers into 26 turnovers on their way to moving to 1-10 on the season. The Beavers will host MacMurray College on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. and will host Spalding University on Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.
