Blackburn announces coaching changes

The Blackburn College Athletic Department had a busier schedule than usual this summer as director of athletics Angie Morenz worked to finalize the coaching staff. The first move was elevating Rob Steinkuehler to the position of head men’s soccer coach. Steinkuehler had served as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach. Steinkuehler moves to the head men’s coaching position after the retirement of Aydin Gonulsen. The head women’s soccer coach position is now filled by Tim Gould. Gould, a 2006 Blackburn graduate, was the head boys and girls coach at Carlinville High School.

Suzannah Behnken was hired this summer to be the next head women’s volleyball and softball coach. Behnken, originally from Tempe, Ariz. will take over for Brandie Mullink in volleyball and Paula Cummings in softball.

“We are excited to welcome Suzannah Behnken to the coaching staff,” Morenz said. “She brings experience as a player and coach to the volleyball and softball programs. We look forward to the changes she will make in both programs, infusing them with her energy and passion.”

Long-time Blackburn staffer John Malin will take over the men’s golf program.  Malin, who is the director of transfer admissions, takes over for Zach Wilhelmi.  “I very much look forward to returning the Blackburn College Men’s Golf program back to the top of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference,” said Malin.

Men’s basketball coach Jason Baribeau will now oversee the men’s and women’s cross country programs.

The department will look to add a women’s tennis coach to round out the changes in the department.

Blackburn College students return to campus Aug. 18.

Practice for those participating in fall sports starts the same day.
