Billy J. Bates

Billy Jo “Snowball” Bates, 43, of Birmingham, Ala., formerly of Carlinville, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019, at his residence.

He was the son of Gary Wayne Bates and Mary Anita Tinder.

Mr. Bates graduated from Carlinville High School in 1994 with a large circle of friends who were by his side through his many interests and businesses; he excelled in 4-H woodworking and was National FFA Wildlife winner. He was a member of one of the most winning Carlinville football teams and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting; nature and his family were his first loves. His 25-year career in the concrete business began at an early age; he was the owner/operator of Bates Concrete Co. of Carlinville and J&J Concrete Pumping of Springfield; he also started the Mossy Oaks Hunting Dogs breeding and training business. His most recent business development in Alabama was R U Prepping, tower organic grow containers that produce vegetables for urban dwellers. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Carlinville and a past officer in the Illinois Hunting Dog Federation.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his step-father, Randolph Tinder of Carlinville; sister, Bobbi Jean Bates of Carlinville; two nieces, Macy Ann Walker and Ella Marie Walker, both of Carlinville; a nephew, Grant Michael Walker of Carlinville; an aunt, Catherine Parrill, and cousin, Angela Parrill Senicz, both of Birmingham, Ala.; a cousin, Adrienne Parrill Applegate of Sylva, N.C.; several aunts, uncles, and cousins of the Parrill family from Collinsville, Tennessee, Colorado and Michigan; and several Carlinville relatives: Ed and Karen Bates and their children, Stacy Kravanya and Kristy Fenton; Frank and Sharon Bates and their children, Jackie Davis, Jamie Gillespie and Jodie Starr; and Eric England and Amy Heffelfinger of Sterling.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Ruth Parrill; paternal grandparents, Wayne and Lillian Bates; aunts, Polly Parrill and Sandra (Bates) England Compton; and a cousin, Parker Fenton.

Friends may call Thursday, March 7, from 4 p.m. until services at 7 p.m. at Carlinville United Methodist Church. Kravanya Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
