Biathlon, running event June 18
Carlinville Winning Communities and First to the Finish will host the fourth annual Carlinville Route 66 Biathlon and Run on Saturday, June 18. Proceeds from the event will go toward the creation of a biking/running trail from Carlinville to Beaver Dam State Park, to help broaden exercise options available to the people of Macoupin County.
The event will include a 5K run, one-mile fun run, biathlon (3.1-mile run and 19-mile bike ride, which may be done individually or as a relay) and a non-competitive bike ride.
Advance registration costs $25 for the 5K, $15 for the fun run, $40 an individual biathlon, $70 for a relay biathlon, or $25 for the bike ride. The early registration deadline is Friday, June 10; after that date, the cost to participate increases. The late registration fee is $30 for the 5K, $20 for the fun run, $45 for an individual biathlon, $75 for a relay biathlon or $30 for the bike ride.
All entrants will receive a short-sleeve dri-fit shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female competitors in the 5K and the biathlon; all participants in the fun run will receive a medal.
On the day of the event, packet pickup and registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. for all races. All races will begin at the corner of Haig and North Broad streets. The fun run will begin at 7:30 a.m. A pre-race meeting for the 5K and biathlon will be held at 7:50 a.m., and the remaining races will all begin at 8 a.m.
The run course will be the same for the biathlon and the 5K. It is a flat out-and-back with a water station at the turn-around. The bike course is a 19-mile, two-loop course over mostly flat country roads, with water stations at miles two and 10.
