The 2018 Miss Macoupin County Fair Queen, 19-year-old Anni Ibberson of Virden, competed in the 2019 Miss Illinois County Fair Queen pageant on Sunday, Jan. 20, and was chosen as a top 15 finalist out of 71 contestants.

Ibberson said the pageant spanned four days, not a moment of which was wasted. “We were up bright and early and busy until late hours of the night,” she said.

Festivities began on Thursday, with contestants meeting each other and beginning practice for the pageant. “The opening dance number was nearly seven minutes long this year and took lots of practicing to get it just right,” said Ibberson. Thursday also included time for contestants to have professional portraits taken and get their competition outfits approved.

On Friday, each contestant had a four-minute interview and practice continued. Preliminaries were held on Saturday, with speech, evening gown and swimsuit competitions.

Sunday began with the contestants having brunch with retiring Queen Samantha Hasselbring. That evening, the top 15 finalists — including Ibberson — competed in the final pageant, which consisted of a speech, swimsuit and evening gown portions, as well as answering three impromptu questions.
