Tuesday prep update: Cavaliers beat Southwestern in volleyball

CARLINVILLE – Last year, Southwestern’s volleyball team won its first regional championship, beating Carlinville three times in four meetings.

As the two teams played for the first time this season, it was the more experienced Cavaliers taking care of the Piasa Birds, but not before a battle.

Carlinville held on 26-24 in game one before a more conventional 25-15 game two win to complete the sweep.

The Cavaliers improved to 6-4 and  5-0 in the South Central Conference. Southwestern slipped to 2-10, 1-4.

Sydney Bates had 13 points, five aces, three kills and eight assists to help the Cavaliers prevail.

Grace Zachary added three points, an ace, a block and 11 kills. Karley Dixon contributed seven points and four aces; Annie Rhodus had five points and three aces; Lydia Albertine one point, one kill, eight assists; Anna Chew one kill, one block; Adrianne Welte one kill, two blocks.

Southwestern got seven digs from Samantha Burns, along with three kills. Karlee Paslay added three kills, while Stephanie Korte had nine assists.

The freshman and JV teams also recorded victories over Southwestern.

Mt. Olive def. South County

WAVERLY – Mt. Olive improved to 8-1 with a Tuesday night 25-16, 25-17 win over the Vipers.

Jill Niehaus had 18 kills, a block, nine points and two aces, while Brianna Henke added eight kills, eight digs and six points with two aces.

Zoe Murphy had 24 assists with eight digs and nine points. Caitlyn Fields added eight digs. Courtney Kernich added five digs.

Bunker Hill def. Nokomis

NOKOMIS –  The Minutemaids won a Prairie State Conference road clash with the Redskins, 25-16, 25-15 Tuesday evening.

Madelyn Allman had seven kills and Hannah Kahl 10 digs for the Minutemaids. Cassidy Taylor added 20 assists and four ace serves.

Elsewhere in the area, Pana downed Taylorville 28-26, 25-23; Roxana trumped East Alton-Wood River 25-10, 25-14; and Greenfield/Northwestern held on to beat Jacksonville Routt, 25-17, 21-25, 25-22.

Boys soccer

Staunton def. Lebanon

LEBANON – Nick Russell and Bryce Buzick each scored second half goals off assists from Justin Cozard in Staunton’s 2-0 win at Lebanon.

Konner Henke got the win in goal as Staunton moved to 3-6.

Beardstown def. North Mac

BEARDSTOWN – Murphy Domitien scored four times as Beardstown shutout North Mac 7-0.

The Tigers held a 16-4 edge in shots and beat North Mac (8-4-1) for the second time this season.

Elsewhere in the area, Greenville won at Gillespie 3-1; St. Teresa stopped Pana 8-1. No report on the Hillsboro at Vandalia game.


CARROLLTON – Ali Hurley shot a 42 as Carlinville beat Carrollton in girls golf action Tuesday.

Lucas Mefford had a 46 but the Cavies lost their team matches.

Junior high baseball

VIRDEN – North Mac used a nine-run fourth inning to win a regional opening contest from Carlinville Middle School Tuesday afternoon, 17-6.

Carlinville scored a run in the first and four runs in the fourth, along with a run in the sixth inning.

For CMS, Alex Strutner scored a run; Dustin Roberts 2 for 3, two runs; Carson Wiser 1 for 3, double, two runs, RBI; Lonny Rosentreter 2 for 4, two RBIs; Ayden Tiburzi 2 for 4, RBI; Cole Tapscott 1 for 2; Cooper Gossard 1 for 3; J.D. Byots 2 for 3, run.

Girls Basketball

The Carlinville Warriors girls basketball team opened the season with victories over Litchfield on Tuesday at the Demuzio Sports Center.

CARLINVILLE – Lane DePratt scored off assists from Nate Kinnison and Reed Gwillim in the second half as Blackburn beat Robert Morris-Springfield 1-0 Tuesday at Blackburn Stadium.

The Beavers got the goal at 54:52 of the second half after a scoreless first half. The Beavers held a 19-15 edge in shots and 9-2 edge in corner kicks.

Kendl Gulik and Matthew O’Guinn saw time in goal for Blackburn.

The volleyball contest at home against Westminster was postponed.
