By Jackson Wilson
The Mt. Olive wrestling team began the 2018-19 season with their first practice on Nov. 5th. The Wildcats are entering their 12th season in a renewable cooperative agreement with Gillespie High School as well as a second season including Bunker Hill and Staunton. This Macoupin County school district co-ops in several other sports including cross country, boys’ and girls’ soccer, girls’ basketball, Staunton softball and Bunker Hill football.
Long-time head coach Ron Ryan is entering the 50th season of his head coaching career. His assistant coaches this year are Don Harvill, Josh Harvill, Richard Carlile, Toby Osmoe and Jeff Osmoe.
This year’s squad has 13 total wrestlers. Seniors are Bryan Parker, Joe Fisher, Tiffany Tiepleman and Mason Huber. Jacob Bailey, Tyler Jones, Amber Speitel, and Lilly Aljets make up the juniors. Garrett Dickerson, Evan Morris and Skyler Baker form the trio of sophomores. The freshmen duo of Kael Souter and Abby Rhodes rounds out the roster.
Mt. Olive will head to Troy for the season’s opening meet against Mascoutah and Triad on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 6 p.m. The Wildcats will host back-to-back meets in the following week – facing Carlyle and Waterloo on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 6:15 p.m. followed by Carlinville, Rochester and New Berlin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29.
Coach Ryan and the wrestling Wildcats would like to thank the community for their continued support over the years. The team is needing and asking for this same support at all home meets this season, including the 44th annual Mt. Olive Invitational on Jan. 5.
